One turbocharged engine, three rows of seating, four trims—great! But zero electrified powertrains might make it a tough sell

Article content
If you haven’t heard, Chevrolet is keen on releasing several new electrified models this year and next—but the redesigned-for-2024 Traverse isn’t one of them. What the automaker did do with this next-generation sport-ute was rebuild it entirely in hopes of making it relevant in the hot three-row market again, because the Traverse seems to have aged rather quickly while the competition freshened up its offerings often. Let’s dig in and see what’s new from the Golden Bowtie.

What engine is in the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse?
All four trims – LS, LT, RS, and the new Z71 – get power from a 2.5L turbocharged engine with a GM-estimated 315 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, a slight increase over the last generation’s output. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive come standard, with the aforementioned new Z71 trim boasting an off-road-capable twin-clutch AWD system. The LT and above offer towing up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg).
Expect this to be the last gasoline-driven generation of the Traverse. What’s odd is that if Chevy can deck out its all-new Silverado as a full EV – and if GM as a whole can offer models like the electric Cadillac Lyriq, Hummer EV, and Chevrolet Blazer, Equinox, and others, why wouldn’t it come out with a battery-powered Traverse now? My Spidey senses say a mid-cycle refresh may very well include an EV trim.

Can the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse go off-road?
Yes! More specifically, it can now, thanks to a new Z71 trim that comes with some cool standard features catered to non-paved-surface driving. Some of the Z71’s features include:
- a ground clearance increase of more than one inch, coupled with an increased track width for added stability, handling, and capability;
- all-terrain tires for increased capability, coupled with 18-inch wheels designed exclusively for Z71;
- a unique front fascia purposely designed for improved approach angle, with an aluminum skid plate and signature Z71 red tow hooks;
- a twin-clutch AWD system designed to optimize traction and handling in off-road driving conditions;
- unique dampers with hydraulic rebound control to improve off-road capability;
- a specific Terrain Mode within the driver-selectable drive modes;
- Hill Descent Control; and
- a standard trailering package

What are the standard safety features on the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse?
There are a decent amount, but the absence of the relatively common blind-spot monitoring one is glaring. Here’s what you do get:
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Forward Collision Alert
- Following Distance Indicator
- Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
- High Beam Assist
- Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking
What does the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse look like?
Following Chevrolet’s new design language, you’ll find a face with thin headlights above a large, tall grille; wraparound two-pronged taillights flank the rear; and the body shape gets some curves toward the back, which look slightly like the new-gen Range Rover, if you ask us. A set of 22-inch wheels and blacked-out accent pieces come with the RS trim, if that’s your thing.

What’s the interior like of the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse?
A standard 17.7-inch infotainment screen more than doubles the size of the outgoing model’s; and a column-mounted gear selector frees up centre space. Front-row and outboard second-row heated seats and a heated steering wheel come standard in Canada, and Chevy claims best-in-class cargo space at 2,763 litres.

How many seats are in the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse?
Well, that’s seven or eight, trim-dependent. Here’s a breakdown:
- Eight-passenger seating is standard on LS, with second- and third-row bench seats
- Seven-passenger seating comes standard on LT, Z71, and RS, with the LS’ eight-passenger configuration available on the LT
- Seven-passenger trims include second-row captain’s chairs
What’s the price of the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse and when will it be available?
Chevrolet says it’ll be released in early 2024, with production via its Lansing Delta Township facility in Michigan. Pricing hasn’t been released yet, but will be slightly before the start of production.
