China will soon drop its mandatory quarantine for international travelers, beginning January 08, 2023. The country has been mostly closed off to international tourists since March 2020, though some travel opened months later for exceptional business and family-related matters. Several other changes were announced to relax the Covid-19 restrictions and end their strict zero-Covid policy.
Changes For Travelers To Begin January 08, 2023
There are several changes to note that will go into effect on January 08, 2023. For one, travelers will no longer need to quarantine on arrival to mainland China. However, they will be required to show a negative Covid-19 test result taken within 48 hours before their departure to China.
Currently, travelers must quarantine for at least five days at a hotel and three days at home if they have a permanent address.
Additionally, the government will no longer track close contacts of those who have tested positive for Covid-19.
More Travel Is Expected
China has also imposed restrictions on the number of flights and passengers allowed into the country. These restrictions are also being dropped. However, details still need to be made clear regarding how many flights will be allowed to enter the country.
These new rules will also make it easier for Chinese citizens to return home, whether they’ve been living abroad or have wanted to travel but couldn’t afford the extensive and expensive mandatory travel quarantine.
However, analysts agree that it may take months before travel returns to pre-pandemic levels.
Wearing masks on flights is still a requirement.
Summary
China’s reopening is a welcome sign for many people who have not been able to visit family. It is also hopeful for businesses and destinations that rely on tourism. However, Covid-19 cases in China remain high, and regional lockdowns may occur.
