Restrictions on travel to and from China were recently laxed. Now some countries are putting up … [+]
Chinese travelers celebrated the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions earlier this week, along with the simultaneous end of quarantine requirements for arriving international passengers.
It sparked a flurry of booking activity both into and out of the country, with families eager to reunite and – like the rest of the world – a market bursting with pent-up demand.
But the announcement comes at a time when China is seeing a surge in coronavirus cases, which has captured the concern of foreign governments.
In the days since China has resumed travel, close to ten countries have already announced restrictions against its citizens, including the United States, Japan, Italy, India, and Taiwan, among others.
This comes after reports that nearly half of the 212 passengers who traveled to Milan from China on Monday tested positive upon arrival.
Pre-tests, contact tracing, and quarantine requirements are all examples of measures taken by various countries. A decision from the European Union on broader restrictions for Chinese travelers entering Europe is expected soon.
The rules from the United States, which require Chinese visitors to show a negative test, will begin on January 5th.
