Chisora trainer defends controversial actions in Fury fight

Derek Chisora’s trainer Don Charles has defended his decision to not pull out Del Boy during the one-sided beating at the hands of Tyson Fury earlier this month. Despite many suggesting that his actions were ‘life threatening’ Charles claims that Del Boy wasn’t taking a ‘hammering’ and could continue.

In the lead-up to fight night, critics branded the contest a complete mismatch and that was proved to be true from round one. After being battered from pillar to post for ten rounds, referee Victor Loughlin made the compassionate decision to step in and wave off the contest but many were left wondering why Charles hadn’t pulled out his fighter sooner.

Defending his actions during an interview with Seconds Out, he said: “My question to the critics is, if they were Don Charles in that moment, what round would they have pulled Chisora out? And for what reason? Because he was taking such a hammering?

“I have to disagree. That’s what everyone is saying ‘he’s taking such a hammering’. Not the fight I was watching. People might think I’m delusional. I will sit everyone down in a room and educate them from coaches to journalists.

Having been through so many grueling fights over the years calls for Chisora to retire were louder than ever post-fight. But the Londoner believes he has more left in the tank. “No, not yet,” Chisora told the same YouTube channel after being asked if he intended to hang up his gloves.

“F*** that s*** I’m going to go on the road now. More fights. We’ll see, don’t know yet. You can’t make decisions at this time. It’s just one of those things. Take some time out, chill, relax and see how I feel.”
