Christ Pratt’s Mario casting controversy has been used to maximum effect by the actor as he “announced” his casting as Disney icon Mickey Mouse in a new movie. However, the whole post was nothing but a clever April Fool’s Day prank by Pratt to amuse his fans and rile up those who are still not over his Mario casting. In his post, the Guardians of the Galaxy star revealed his latest role to the world and received a mix of reactions depending on whether the reader remembered exactly what day it was.
Many people saw straight through the prank, having been caught out by other “news” throughout the day, but some were seemingly unaware of the joke behind the post. The reaction of those believing the casting to be genuine was strangely split between those ready to sign onto the idea of Pratt taking on the role of Disney’s iconic mascot and those who could think of no worse nightmare.
Of course, in the coming week, we will see Pratt voicing Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Despite the backlash against Pratt’s casting, the film is expected to be a hit this month, and from Pratt’s self-aware April Fool’s prank, he clearly has no issues with handling his critics.
Chris Pratt Says He Knows Why Mario Fans Are Protective of the Character
Like with many iconic characters, the idea of someone new taking over the role of Mario was always going to be tricky to get around without generating some polarizing opinions on social media. However, Chris Pratt was more than aware of why fans reacted as they did when it was revealed that he would be voicing the iconic Nintendo character. He said:
“Go watch the movie and then we can talk. I really think that once you see the movie, and in all honesty, I think you probably need to watch it twice. In all honesty, the answer though is that this is a passionate fan base, and I understand, I’m a part of it. This is the soundtrack to your youth, and you don’t want someone to come along and cynically destroy it as a cash grab with the movie. I fully understand that you do not want that to happen and there were so many hearts and souls and minds dedicated to making sure that didn’t happen. The movie really honors the video game.”
How exactly Pratt would have fared if he had actually been about to take on the role of Mickey Mouse is something we will never know…at least for the time being. Who knows what could happen if and when Mickey makes his next big screen appearance, and it could turn out that this April Fool’s prank is something close to a Simpsons-style prediction. If it ever happens, we will come back and discuss the fallout of that possible scenario.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie arrives in cinemas on Apr. 5.
