Chris Rock has unveiled all about the controversial Will Smith slap that highjacked last year’s Oscars awards show in his latest Netflix comedy special, Outrage.
In the foul-mouthed standup special, Rock was welcomed by a packed-out Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre as he gifted audiences with a tell-all hour-long spiel.
Kicking it off early with reference to the infamous slap, Rock told the audience that “you’ve got to watch what you say because words hurt”.
“Anybody who says words hurt has never been punched in the face,” he said.
“You never know who might get triggered… the thing I have a problem with is the selective outrage.”
Taking a jab at “woke s**t” and cancel culture, Rock laid it all out as he jokingly criticised people who “play Michael Jackson songs but don’t play R Kelly”.
Later in the set, Rock honed in on the Oscars incident, enlightening the audience with his take on the altercation.
“Y’all know what happened to me, getting smacked by (Will) Smith. A year ago last week, I got smacked at the f***ing Oscars by this motherf****r,” he began.
“A lot of people are like, did it hurt? It still hurts! I got Summertime ringing in my ears.
“….I’m not a victim, baby. You will never see me on Oprah… It’s never gonna happen. No, f**k that s**t, I took that hit like Manny Pacquiao.
“I know you can’t tell on camera, but Will Smith is significantly bigger than me … we are not the same size.
“This guy does movies with his shirt off. You’ll never see me do a movie with my shirt off… Will practices selective outrage.”
Reflecting on Will and Jada Smith’s turbulent relationship history, Rock then went on to distance himself from “entanglement” claims.
“Everybody that really knows, knows I had nothing to do with that… I didn’t have any entanglements,” he said.
“For people that don’t know, well everybody knows, but Will Smith’s wife was f***ing her son’s friend. Okay?
“I normally would not talk about this s**t, but for some reason, they put it on the internet. I have no idea why two talented people would do something that low down.
“We’ve all been cheated on, everyone in here has been cheated on. None of us have ever been interviewed by the person who cheated on us on television.
“None of us are like, ‘hey, I was sucking somebody else’s d**k. How did that make you feel?’” as he opened the microphone out to the audience.
Rock then went on to share how Smith failed to pick up his calls after the cheating scandal arose, taking a jab at Smith’s decision to target him following mass scrutiny.
“She hurt him way more than he hurt me,” he said. “Everybody in the world was calling him a b***h, and I tried to call him to give my condolences and he didn’t pick up the phone to me… Everybody was calling him a b***h… calling his wife a predator.
“And whose he hit? Me. A person he knows he can beat. That is some b***h a** s**t,” Rock said, shedding light on Smith’s questionable slap.
“That’s what the f*** happened… I did nothing to this motherf*****.”
Rock continued to claim the feud goes back to 2016, when Pinkett Smith wanted to boycott the Oscars after Will Smith was not nominated.
“She f***ing said, ‘He should quit because Will didn’t get nominated for Concussion’,” he said.
“So, I did some jokes about it. Who gives a f**k? That’s how it is. She starts it, I finish it, OK? That’s what the f**k happened.”
The Oscars exchange between Smith and Rock took place after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.
“Jada, I love you, GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” he quipped.
The reference was to the 1997 movie featuring Demi Moore with a shaved head. Pinkett Smith, 51, has alopecia, which causes hair loss.
Smith then walked onstage and smacked Rock before returning to his seat and in front of a stunned audience, shouting at him: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f…… mouth.”
Later in the evening — in his acceptance speech after winning the Best Actor Oscar for his role as tennis patriarch Richard Williams in King Richard — Smith apologised to the Academy and other nominees but made no reference to Rock.
Smith subsequently apologised on multiple occasions over the incident and resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ahead of being issued a 10-year ban from the Oscars.
In an apology he issued in July over the incident in an online clip, Smith said his spouse “had nothing to do with” his attack.
“I made a choice on my own from my own experiences, from my history with Chris,” he said.
“I want to say sorry to my kids and my family for the heat that I’ve brought on all of us.
“I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk, and when he is he will reach out.
“So I will say to you, Chris, I apologise to you. My behaviour was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”
In February, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced it had established a crisis team ahead of this year’s March 12 ceremony.
“Because of last year, we’ve opened our minds to the many things that can happen at the Oscars,” Academy chief executive Bill Kramer said.
Kramer said that the institution has implemented the organisation of a group focused on handling emergency situations at the annual event.
“We have a whole crisis team, something we’ve never had before, and many plans in place,” he said.
“We’ve run many scenarios. So it is our hope that we will be prepared for anything that we may not anticipate right now but that we’re planning for just in case it does happen.”
