Fire still burning bright for Stuart Broad after Sydney five-wicket haul

England head coach Chris Silverwood has insisted he wants to continue in the role, despite his side’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Australia in the Ashes.

Silverwood has come in for heavy criticism over his dual role as coach and selector, with former England international Rob Key describing him as “out of his depth”.

However, Silverwood believes he is still the right man for the job, although he did admit that he has been given no assurances about his future.

“I do believe they are still playing for us,” Silverwood said. “The comments I’ve had from the dressing room suggest that as well.

“My job’s going to be under scrutiny. We all know that. I would love the chance to put some of this right. I think I can do that.

“I know I am a good coach. I would love to be given the opportunity, but there are certain things out of my hands at the moment.”

Captain Joe Root has backed Silverwood, insisting it is the players who have “let him down”.

Speaking ahead of the final Ashes Test, Root said: “I think the performances we put in during the first three games, I feel we’ve let him and the coaches down to a degree.

“I think he’s very calm, he has the respect of the guys in the group and he’s got a desperation to see everyone do well.”

England’s managing director Ashley Giles is the man tasked with writing a report on the side’s Ashes defeat and he has insisted that mass sackings are not the answer.

“Unless we look at more systemic change and a collective responsibility and solutions, we can make whatever changes we want,” Giles said.

“You can change me, change the head coach, change the captain. But we’re only setting up future leaders for failure. That’s all we’re doing. We’re only pushing it down the road.”
