Christie’s New York To Sell The Light Of Peace Diamond For $15-Million

Exceptional diamonds, like exceptional houses, are always given names, and Christie’s leads off its spring New York jewelry auction with a great example. The Light of Peace diamond, is estimated to sell for between $10-million and $15-million, though it is offered without reserve. It leads the June 7 Magnificent Jewels auction, which will also include signed pieces by Cartier, Chaumet, Harry Winston, JAR, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels and Verdura – in other words, all the usual suspects.

The Light of Peace is a D color, Internally Flawless diamond, with a pear-brilliant cut, weighing 126.76 carats. Formerly known as the Zale Light of Peace, the diamond was previously owned by the Zale Corporation of Dallas, which arranged showings of the diamond and used proceeds of the ticket sales to establish a fund for peace-supporting missions. The current owner, who is selling the diamond in the June Christie’s sale, will donate some of the proceeds to the USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee agency.

If provenance is your thing, there are plenty of pieces from private collections in the sale, including some from the collection of Adolphus Andrews, Jr. and Emily Taylor Andrews – inluding a Van Cleef & Arpels mystery-set sapphire and diamond bracelet (estimate $250,000 – 350,000. There are also jewels from the collection of Betsey Cushing Whitney, including a ruby, emerald and diamond Van Cleef & Arpels earrings and necklace set, made circa 1970, estimated at $400,000 – 600,000. A notable piece from the collection of Anne Eisenhower, called the Jarretière, is also a Van Cleep piece, a ruby and diamond bracelet acquired by Marlene Dietrich in 1937 (estimate $2,500,000 – 4,500,000).

Colored diamonds remain a solid investment, and there are two notable specimens in the sale: a fancy vivid blue diamond ring of 3.10 carats (estimate $4,200,000 – 5,200,000); and a fancy intense pink diamond ring of 4.01 carats (estimate $1,500,000 – 2,500,000). Previews take place from June 2 through June 6.
