Researchers found the bill for Christmas dinner has increased three times faster than pay. Traditional favourites including turkey, pigs in blankets, carrots and roast potatoes have gone up by an average 18 percent, while wages only had a 5.7 percent boost.

And the cost of cranberry sauce and bread sauce has risen by a third.

The TUC, which carried out the research, is now calling on the Government to give cost-of-living pay rises to public sector workers.

It also wants the minimum wage bumped up to £15 an hour. It’s currently £10.90 or £11.95 in London.

The union group said: “Everyone should be able to enjoy turkey with their family, but soaring food and energy prices mean many families will struggle to afford it. Ministers can no longer ignore the crisis facing working families. [They] need to shield families from the misery of the recession.”

Aldi was the cheapest supermarket in November for a basket of 48 items, Which? found – at £77.21 it was £26.90 less than dearest Waitrose.
