After more than three decades, Chuck Norris remains open to doing a sequel to Sidekicks. Directed by Aaron Norris and written by Lou Illar and Galen Thompson, Sidekicks starred late actor Jonathan Brandis as a bullied child named Barry who dreams of being the sidekick of his favorite action movie star, Chuck Norris. In the daydream sequences, Norris plays himself, serving as a mental mentor for the young hero. Barry eventually sees his dreams come true when he teams up with Norris and actually becomes the Delta Force star’s sidekick.
The end of Sidekicks teases that the story could continue with new fans of Norris similarly dreaming to team up with the actor and martial artist. As Norris remains popular with fans more than three decades later, doing a sequel with a new young actor isn’t outside the realm of possibility. Better yet, Norris has confirmed that he’s happy to return for a potential sequel, telling fans at a Nashville Comic-Con panel that Sidekicks still has a special place in his heart. As Norris explains, per ComicBook.com:
“I agree [Sidekicks is underrated], Sidekicks is one of my films that holds a special place in my heart and if I were ever offered a sequel, I would absolutely take up that offer. It’s a film that inspires hope and courage, especially to the youth.”
Chuck Norris Once Ran a Marathon Backwards Just to See What Second Place Looks Like
While the above fact may or may not be true, it’s not so hard to believe, given the strength and toughness Chuck Norris always exhibits in his movie and TV roles. That lends itself to the concept of Sidekicks in the first place, focusing on a fan so enamored with Norris that he spends all day daydreaming about beating up bad guys with the Walker, Texas Ranger star. The viral “Chuck Norris facts” like the one above could even play into a Sidekicks movie, much in the way they were joked about when Norris appeared in The Expendables 2.
Acting more sporadically in recent years, Norris hasn’t appeared in a movie since his cameo in The Expendables 2, which was released in 2012. He popped up for a cameo in Hawaii Five-0 in 2020, which followed a special appearance as himself in The Goldbergs in 2015. More recently, Norris has been making his mark in the video game world, as he lends his voice and likeness to the new game Crime Boss: Rockay City. Recently, he also said he’d be up for appearing in Dodgeball 2, following his cameo in the original movie.
“I haven’t gotten a call about [Dodgeball 2] yet, but it’d be a lot of fun to make a return appearance,” the actor also said at Nashville Comic-Con.
In any case, time will tell if Sidekicks will be getting a sequel as well. if you want to revisit the 1992 cult classic, Sidekicks is currently streaming on Prime Video.
