Perhaps it’s not unexpected that Guru Dutt, one of the most well-known and approachable filmmakers of the 1950s who gave up because of his personal and professional troubles, is revered by director R Balki. Perhaps it’s not entirely surprising that Balki regards Dutt as a martyr for “great” cinema, whose career was (in Balki’s opinion) deliberately ended by “critics” for making movies that ecstatic, immature cinephiles like to refer to as “ahead of their time.”
Balki, the adman who transitioned to Bollywood in the middle of the 2000s, demonstrates the same giddiness. R Balki’s “Chup” is a prime example of filmmaking where a decent story & direction (even with a limited budget) can make a film successful if it is released at a right time. Chup’s success has definitely paved the way for Dulquer Salmaan in Bollywood as the movie’s highlight was stated to be the lead actor’s acting. Chup is currently running in cinemas, although, in limited theatres.
