MILPITAS — Cisco Systems has sketched out plans to slash well over 100 jobs in the Bay Area, according to an official filing that the legendary tech titan provided to state labor officials.
The company’s job cuts are slated to occur over the next few weeks or months, Cisco stated in a WARN letter filed with the state’s Employment Development Department.
“We regret to inform you that Cisco Systems will lay off certain employees at its Milpitas facility located at 560 McCarthy Blvd.,” read the WARN notice to the EDD, the mayor of Milpitas and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.
San Jose-based Cisco is planning to cut 165 jobs at the Milpitas site, the tech company told the EDD.
Employees have the option of selecting a termination date of Feb. 3, 2023, or March 13, 2023, Cisco stated in the WARN notice.
“The termination will be effective on those dates or on a date within a 13-day period immediately following those dates,” Cisco stated. “This action is expected to be permanent in nature.”
With the latest disclosures of job cuts from Cisco, tech and biotech companies — an estimated 43 firms — have decided to cut at least 9,100 Bay Area jobs. These totals were compiled from filings reflecting terminations that were slated to take effect on or after Oct. 1 of 2022, according to this news organization’s review of an array of WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) letters.
Nine tech or biotech companies have decided to chop at least 200 jobs in the Bay Area in the final quarter of 2022 and during the first half of 2023. They are:
- Meta Platforms: 2,564 job cuts affecting workers in Menlo Park, Sunnyvale, Fremont, Burlingame and San Francisco
- Twitter: 1,126 layoffs of employees in San Francisco and San Jose
- Cepheid, a biotech firm: 1,003 worker terminations in Newark, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara
- Doordash, an online food ordering and food delivery company: 311 jobs in San Francisco
- Nuro, a robotics and autonomous delivery vehicle company, 269 job cuts in Mountain View
- Amazon, an e-commerce behemoth: 263 positions lost in Sunnyvale
- Argo AI, an autonomous vehicle startup: 259 job cuts in Palo Alto
- Lyft, a ride-hailing giant: 227 jobs eliminated in San Francisco
- Oracle, a software and cloud services leviathan: 200 terminations in Redwood City and Belmont.
Cisco’s filing showed that the majority of the layoffs that the company is planning affect software engineers, technical engineers, hardware engineers, product managers and supervisors, this news organization’s review of the Cisco WARN notice shows.
“None of the affected employees are represented by a union, nor do any have bumping rights applicable to the positions in question,” Saidah Grayson Dill, a Cisco deputy general counsel, wrote in the WARN letter to the EDD.
