Many travelers use TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, Nexus and CLEAR to get through airport security quickly. Though these programs aren’t free to enroll in, they are ways to save time and reduce hassle when traveling. However, due to a security issue that occurred in July 2022, some CLEAR members will need to show additional identification at U.S. airports.
TSA To Require Extra Screening
One of the perks of using CLEAR is to avoid the need to show identification. Once enrolled (for a fee of $189 per year, though some airlines provide discounts for those enrolled in their loyalty programs), users can check in at a CLEAR pod at a participating airport by scanning their eyes or via a fingerprint. CLEAR uses biometrics to confirm the identity of enrollees, which can provide faster entry to the departure gate.
Once verified, members are guided to the front of the TSA security line or the TSA PreCheck security line by one of the CLEAR staff members.
But, some users, who will be chosen randomly by TSA, will need to provide their I.D.s to proceed. This new policy comes from the TSA to CLEAR and the more than 50 airports participating in the service. The additional verification will include more customers beginning this month and going forward.
Summary
Time will tell if the new random security checks required for CLEAR members will significantly slow the airport security process. So far, we’ve seen many travelers in 2023 with no sign of slowing down. Regardless of CLEAR membership status, planning for delays when traveling is a good idea.
