BBC News presenter Clive Myrie gave an emotional tribute during the opening on BBC News at One on Monday after the news of his colleague and friend George Alagiah’s death.

It was revealed that George had died at the age of 67 after battling bowel cancer for nearly 10 years.

Opening the latest instalment of the news show, Clive explained: “Today at one, Gorge Alagiah, the much-loved presenter of the BBC News at Six has died, he was 67.

“A well-respected journalist and author, he was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014. He was a trusted voice of authority, he spent the last few years calling for better NHS cancer screening.

“His work in Africa was often memorable and his reporting gave a voice to millions. We will have an appreciation of a remarkable life, also this lunchtime.

“The journalist, presenter, author and our colleague George Alagiah has died. In many ways he was a pioneer in British broadcast journalism.

“He was one of the first people of colour to work for a major UK Broadcaster. The BBC director general Tim Davie said George was an outstanding journalist, audiences could sense his kindness, empathy and wonderful humanity.”

After looking back at his career and the achievements he had made, Clive added: “On a personal note, George touched all of us here in the newsroom with his kindness and generosity, his warmth and good humour.

“We loved him here at BBC News and I loved him as a mentor, colleague and friend. His spirit strength and courage in the later years of his life are something his family can be so proud of, journalism has lost a giant.”

Viewers of the show were left in floods of tears listening to Clive’s tribute and took to their Twitter accounts to express their condolences.
