Clock Tower Game from WayForward Rumored to be the Next Classic Survival Horror Revival

0

We’re living in a golden age for survival horror remakes, with revivals of Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 recently released and Silent Hill 2 on the horizon, and now another spooky series may be joining them. According to prolific survival horror insider Dusk Golem, a revival of the Clock Tower franchise may be coming out way, courtesy of Sunsoft and developer WayForward Technologies.

This particular rumor began when Dusk Golem began hyping up a new announcement stream from Sunsoft, with an obvious WayForward tease. Many assumed this to be about Clock Tower (it’s really the only horror IP Sunsoft owns) but he didn’t come right out and say that. Unfortunately, the showcase didn’t include a Clock Tower announcement, with Dusk Golem saying that was a “shock.” Later, when responding to another Twitter user, he seemed to confirm he was expecting Clock Tower.

Of course, take this with a grain of salt for now. Like any insider who plays the game for a while, Dusk Golem has had some misses and has accumulated his share of detractors. That said, he’s also delivered plenty of accurate information, particularly in regards to Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Does he have the goods on Clock Tower? We’ll have to wait and see, but if there’s a time to bring the series back, it’s now.

For those unfamiliar, the Clock Tower games were developed by the now-defunct Human Entertainment for the SNES and PlayStation. They were more traditional atmospheric adventure games, in which players were stalked by the series’ iconic killer Scissorman. While not huge hits, the Clock Tower games influenced other scary games, with the SNES version in particular considered one of the progenitors of the survival horror genre. Of course, the series has become a bit of a cult hit amongst fans.

Following the bankruptcy of Human Entertainment, Clock Tower was purchased by Sunsoft, which explains why they’re involved in these revival rumors. After a long dormant period, Sunsoft has emerged again, with enhanced re-releases of classics like Trip World, Gimmick!, and Uforia in the works. Meanwhile, WayForward just got done with another classic revival, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, which I found to be a fun if slightly unambitious remake in my full review.

What do you think? Are the Clock Tower revival rumors the real deal? Interested in playing if they are?
