Jackson State University’s football players will be confined to their Houston hotel when they aren’t playing this weekend because of the fatal shooting of rapper Takeoff, their coach Deion Sanders said.
The undefeated Tigers are traveling from Jackson, Miss., to face Texas Southern in Houston on Saturday. In a video shared on social media, the JSU head coach said: “Takeoff was right murdered in a dice game in Houston — where we’re going. So, that eliminates all y’all leaving that hotel.”
Takeoff — Kirshnik Khari Ball, 28, a member of the platinum-selling rap trio Migos — was shot and killed early Tuesday at a bowling alley in downtown Houston’s tourist and entertainment district. No arrests have been announced.
Besides the hotel lockdown, which he said precludes even outside meetups with parents, Sanders urged his players to take the occasion to think about embracing a lifestyle change.
“We gotta leave that behind that we once did. … Now you guys are Jackson State royalty. You’re 8-0 now. You’re not whoever you were a year ago. You cannot kick it with the same dudes you kicked it with.”
Sanders, 55, is in his third year leading the Jackson State program. He was a professional player in both the NFL and Major League Baseball, including a season each with the San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants in the mid-’90s. After his playing days ended in 2005, he became a TV sports commentator and a high school coach.
