Coach K reveals where he’ll be watching games next season

Coach K says he won’t be attending Duke games this year because he doesn’t want to be a distraction for new head coach Jon Scheyer.

Duke basketball fans shouldn’t expect to see much of Coach K this upcoming season. At least not at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The retired head coach told Jon Rothstein on the College Hoops Today podcast that he’s going to stay away from Duke home games because he doesn’t want to be too much of a distraction.

Krzyzewski retired this year after 42 years in charge of the Blue Devils. His right hand man, Jon Scheyer was appointed his replacement.

Coach K doesn’t want to distract from Duke’s reboot under Jon Scheyer

“There’s no place in Cameron Indoor Stadium — a box or something — where you can get away from the maddening crowds,” Krzyzewski said. “That’s going to be frustrating because I’d like to be there, but I also don’t want to be in the way.”

He did admit that he might attend some road games, so long as there are box seats where he won’t be plainly visible to the crowd.

“I don’t want to be a distraction,” Krzyzewski said. “I don’t need for people to see me. I’ve been seen enough. But I do behind the scenes want Jon (Scheyer) to always know…that I’m there if he needs me at any time.”

Scheyer has the unenviable task of filling the biggest shoes in college basketball. Coach K won five national titles with Duke while going to the Final Four 13 times. He finished his career with a 1,202-368 record.

It’ll be hard enough for the new head coach to live up to expectations and keep the Blue Devils trending in the right direction without the former head coach turning up to every game.

Krzyzewski also expressed concern about people thinking he’s trying to play puppet master with Scheyer.

Hopefully someday he’ll feel comfortable being a regular visitor to Cameron Indoor, but it’s only fair to Scheyer and next year’s team if he stays away for now.
