It’s time to support your local independent record store on Record Store Day, Saturday, April 22.
Every year, artists, record labels, pressing plants, and music enthusiasts band together to celebrate independently owned brick and mortar record stores.
This typically includes events, special guests, deals and all things representing record store culture. Attendees during Weekend 2 of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio will also get to participate in Record Store Day on the festival grounds inside the Coachella Record Safari.
With a copy of rapper Joey Badass’ “2000” in hand, Brandon Willis, 23, of Maryland, was digging through crates to see what he could find.
“I started getting more into vinyl in like 2019 and I think the first one I got was ‘Best Day Ever’ by Mac Miller for Record Store Day,” he said.
There does seem to be something special about digging through crates as opposed to just shopping online.
“It’s more like an element of surprise,” Willis said. “You don’t know what you’re gonna get with all these crates. Like a kid in a candy store.”
The on-site pop-up shop was brought to Coachella in 2014 by Alex Rodriguez, owner of the Los Angeles-based Record Safari on Los Feliz Boulevard. The temporary festival space carries over 25,000 pieces of new and used vinyl, as well as exclusive merchandise and tote bags that are only available here. The start of Weekend 1 had fans clamoring to get their hands on a rare vinyl LP of Frank Ocean’s “Blonde” album, of which there was only one copy available onsite and it was selling for hundreds of dollars.
Attendees will have access to nearly everything on the Record Store Day list, but quantities vary.
There are three categories to comb through: Small run, regional titles that are either sold at specific stores or have less than 1,000 copies made; RSD first titles that may be released to retailers or websites in the future; and exclusives that are physically released only at independent record stores.
Fans Angeline Nicole, 16, and Amelie Rodriguez, 17, both of Las Vegas, Nev., were inside the record store to pick up some new music. Nicole bought Queen’s “Greatest Hits” album and Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.” They didn’t specifically stop by for RSD, but Rodriguez said she frequents her local record store whenever she has money.
“It’s the first place I go to,” she said. “I have my whole setup in my room.”
The go-to artists in her vinyl collection include Beach House’s “Depression Cherry” and anything by Harry Styles. Nicole added that she just likes to put on anything by Journey.
The on-site store opened half an hour after festival doors at noon so that fans could line up to snag their sought-after exclusives before they sell out. Some of this year’s titles include Taylor Swift’s “folklore: the long pond studio sessions,” The 1975’s “Live with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra,” and Coachella Day 3 performer Björk’s “the fossora remixes.”
According to Rodriguez, the most popular RSD titles this year at Coachella were released by Taylor Swift, The 1975 and Beach House.
Not only is hitting the record store a great way to cool off in the air-conditioning, but for $10 they’ll stash your vinyl until Sunday to keep it from melting in the hot Coachella sun.
