We’ve got some good Patriot League basketball in the northeast tonight as the 14-7 Colgate Raiders travel to face the 10-11 Boston University Terriers. The Raiders narrowly defeated American on Saturday to stay undefeated in conference play, 8-0. The last time they faced BU was at home and they got a 77-71 win, but the spread is bigger than that today. BU won last time out, but has lost four of its last five games.

Colgate is clearly the class of the Patriot League, two games ahead of Lehigh in conference play, but over this eight game win streak in conference play, they haven’t been a gambler’s dream. For the season, they’re 8-12 against the spread and in their last five games, they haven’t covered once.
That includes when they had BU at home on January 11. Their inability to cover as a favorite doesn’t have anything to do with their lack of offense, they’re eighth in offensive efficiency in the nation. It’s their defense that’s the big problem.
Last time the Raiders faced BU, they allowed Jonas Harper to go off for 23 points, and the Terriers scored 71, that was with their leading score, Walter Whyte held to just six. Breaking: Colgate’s play on defense, it’s BAD. They are 261st in the nation in defensive efficiency and their opponents shoot 47.2% from the field and 38.5% from three.
This game won’t get played at a fast enough pace for me to have an interest in the over, but when a team like Colgate shoots 50.9% from the field for the season, and allows their opponents to basically do the same, you can’t take the under. That leads me to just follow the trend. Colgate doesn’t seem interested in covering spreads lately, so give me the Terriers.
