The Phoenix Suns reportedly plan to waive Chris Paul. While that news could send the 38-year-old point guard to free agency, Colin Cowherd pitched a trade instead.
On Thursday, the Fox Sports host said the Boston Celtics should send Marcus Smart to Phoenix for Paul.
Cowherd dismissed “ridiculous” speculation of Paul joining LeBron James on the Los Angeles Lakers, calling them the “worst fit” because the Lakers need shooting. On the other hand, he thinks Paul is just what Boston needs.

The Celtics have two young, durable stars in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, so Cowherd thinks they can afford for Paul to miss some time throughout his 19th season. Furthermore, the 12-time All-Star provides Boston with the ball distributor it has lacked for years.
As Cowherd sees it, Paul would better complement two wing stars who can make up for the veteran losing steam on defense.
Meanwhile, Cowherd called Smart “exactly what Phoenix needs.” The 2021-22 Defensive Player of the Year would conversely join elite scorers in Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. Durant’s injury history also makes it enticing to swap out Paul with a younger guard capable of playing more games and minutes.
Perhaps Paul makes sense for Boston, and Smart would be a useful addition to the Suns. But the question is, why would the Celtics trade a longtime starter for a player about to get waived?
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Suns are still exploring trade options involving Paul. Yet one would imagine a $30.8 million salary, which becomes fully guaranteed on June 28, would hinder his market value.
