The top two teams in the college basketball power rankings lost, leading to a new No. 1 as we enter Week 6 of the season.
The one predictable thing about this college basketball season is that it is completely unpredictable. Just a week after we proclaimed Texas as the heart of college basketball, both the Longhorns and Houston Cougars lost, leading to a significant shakeup at the top of this week’s power rankings.
Who climbed to No. 1 and how far did the two Texas powerhouses fall? That answer is coming up in this week’s college basketball power rankings but we’ll kick things off, as always, with our honorable mentions.
Week 6 College Basketball Power Rankings – Honorable Mentions

Arkansas, Duke, Gonzaga, Kentucky, UCLA
There is a strong collection of blue bloods lurking outside the Top 10 as Duke, Gonzaga, Kentucky and UCLA appear to be stabilizing after some early season struggles. All four of these teams are talented enough to make a Final Four run, especially given the volatile nature of the top teams this season.
The other team in this section is Arkansas, which is humming along at 9-1 with its lone loss coming by three to Creighton in a thriller at the Maui Invitational. The Razorbacks will have a tough slog in a deep SEC but they can absolutely be a factor when all is said and done.
