Collingwood have overcome their own wastefulness to ease past GWS by 32 points and consolidate their top-four spot in skipper Steph Chiocci’s 50th AFLW game.
The Magpies dominated from the outset, smashing the Giants around the contest, but their inaccuracy kept the match alive until they kicked away in the second half to prevail 6.10 (46) to 2.2 (14).
The victory keeps Collingwood level with Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne on 24 points, only behind the top trio on percentage, and a full game clear of top-four chasers Geelong and Richmond.
GWS had a sole rushed behind until Jodie Hicks goaled five minutes into the fourth term, while youngster Brodee Mowbray added another in the final minute.
Collingwood’s midfield delighted in Alison Downie’s ruck dominance, with gun on-baller Jaimee Lambert (23 disposals) starring.
Lambert was well-supported by Jordyn Allen (19 disposals, eight marks) while Chloe Molloy turned in a typically eye-catching performance, booting two goals.
GWS gun Alyce Parker (20 disposals, eight clearances) worked her way into the game, while Tarni Evans and Katherine Smith worked hard and skipper Alicia Eva (16 disposals, eight tackles) was tireless.
Both teams went goalless in the opening quarter but Collingwood drew first blood early in the second when Molloy sharked a ruck contest and somehow dribbled a goal through three different sets of legs.
From there, Collingwood dominated around the ground but recorded six behinds, including one rushed, before their next goal.
A proppy-looking Sabrina Frederick, Molloy and Ash Brazill were among those with wayward radars.
With six minutes left in the third term, Mikala Cann marked Tarni Brown’s shanked kick for goal, then quickly snapped the Magpies’ second.
Brown added Collingwood’s third on the stroke of three-quarter time to extend their lead to 26.
The Magpies continued to dominate in the final term but GWS earned some scoreboard reward when Hicks, normally a defender, burst forward late to nab their first goal.
Chiocci, the first AFLW player to captain a team 50 times, pounced close to goal late in the final quarter to cap off her milestone game.
