‘Common mistakes’ to avoid when cleaning windows

The Residence Collection has worked with industry experts to share everything there is to know about cleaning windows – from the best time to do it, a step-by-step guide as well as some common mistakes to avoid. With the Bank Holiday just around the corner, here is how you can achieve “streak-free” windows at home.

It is extremely important to clean windows throughout the year due to built up grime making them appear dirty, reducing visibility.

It can also prevent long term damage and ensure windows continue to operate smoothly, increasing their lifespan.

The interior experts at Conservatory Blinds 4 Less explained: “You should aim to clean your windows at a minimum once or twice a year depending on your location.

“You may need to clean them more if you live near the sea where salt exposure is high, or if you live in a city close to busy roads.”

But there are some “common mistakes” to avoid when it comes to cleaning windows, according to the experts at The Residence Collection.

The pros advised against wearing jewellery when cleaning as this can actually scratch the glass, so make sure to take bracelets and rings off before starting.

They added: “Don’t spray product directly onto dirt and dust. This results in the dirt being smeared around, creating more mess rather than eliminating it.

“Also don’t use a dirty, used cloth to clean windows as this can make windows look dirtier.”

To prepare, remove any dried or cracked paint on the glass as well as removing any other substances from the glass using a razor blade.

She explained: “Sweep away any dirt from the window frame with a dry, clean cloth or remove with a vacuum. Spraying product directly onto dirt and dust results in it being smeared around, creating more mess. Use warm soapy water to wipe frames, sashes and sills and dry with a soft clean cloth.

“Using an unclean cloth to wash or dry your windows can result in them looking dirtier than before you started, making your hard work pointless. Remember to wash from top to bottom to avoid drips and once they’re dry, wipe the glass to remove any dirt an dust.

“Use a household window cleaner and a soft cloth to buff the glass until it shines.” For the hardware, hinges, locking mechanisms and handles, they will require periodic lubrication to ensure optimum performance.

Applying one drop of light machine oil is plenty, once of twice a year, according to Sarah. She added: “Wipe away any excess with a clean cloth. Be careful not to get any oil on the main profile. Wipe tracks and hinges with a clean cloth to keep them dirt free and moving freely.”
