Comparing Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and Sainsbury’s cheddar to Cathedral City

Food prices have skyrocketed in recent times, with some products costing more than double what they were last year.

It comes as the cost of living crisis continues to impact households across the country.

Shopping around to find the best deals can help us save money on our shopping bills.

Also, swapping brand-name products for supermarket own-brands is a great way to spend less cash.

I recently taste-tested HP Sauce against supermarket own-brand products and discovered the best-tasting sauce was from Aldi and cost 69p.

That is a whopping £2.61 cheaper than the 600g HP Sauce at Sainsbury’s, which costs £3.30.

Our colleague Laura Nightingale at Surrey Live has now done a taste test comparing supermarket own-brand cheddar cheese to Cathedral City – read on to find out how she got on.

I decided to compare cheese from four major supermarkets to see if any could compete with the famous household name.

The results were very close. And only one of the five cheddars I tried was disappointing. The others were very similar in taste, appearance and texture.

5. Lidl

It was only a few months ago when a pack of cheese from Aldi and Lidl cost around £1.85, it’s now £2.65 a pack.

Even though Lidl’s cheese is still cheaper than Cathedral City, it’s nothing like it.

Much darker in colour, the texture reminded me of plastic and it was bland. It was disappointing and I wouldn’t buy it again.

Price: £2.65

Size: 400g

4. Sainsbury’s

The next two brands of cheese (Sainsbury’s and Aldi) were very similar, and Sainsbury’s only came fourth because it cost 20p more.

It tasted creamy, the texture was super soft, too, and it had a mild taste.

Price: £2.85

Size: 400g

3. Aldi

There is nothing wrong with this cheese and I would happily buy it again.

It was milder than Cathedral City, don’t get me wrong, but is a good (and much cheaper) alternative.

Price: £2.65

Size: 400g

2. Cathedral City

Before I even tasted this cheese I knew it was a top brand.

It has a pungent strong cheddar smell and a rich taste.

It had a robust texture, tangy aftertaste and it reminded me of my childhood.

While it was the most expensive pack of the bunch (and 50g less in size), supermarkets often run special offers where you can pick up Cathedral City for £3 (current deal in Sainsbury’s).

So it’s worth keeping an eye out for when it’s on offer.

Also, the best before date is within two dates, so if you are a family who gets through a lot of cheese, buy in bulk when it’s cheaper.

It also came in a nice re-sealable pouch.

Price: £4.20

Size: 350g

1. Tesco

If you can get hold of Cathedral City for £3 then buy it, but if not I would recommend the offering from Tesco.

It was mellow to begin with and within seconds a strong cheddar flavour hit my taste buds.

It was smooth and very creamy and enjoyable to eat.

Price: £3

Size: 400g
