EnergyAustralia has warned customers of “unwelcome news” in an email pointing to a significant increase in energy prices.

In the letter, which was sent on Monday morning, customers are told there had been an overall increase in the price of domestic energy supply.

“We acknowledge that it’s likely to be unwelcome news for you and many of our customers,” the provider wrote.

“We’re committed to providing support to help you manage the impact of these changes.”

One customer was told they could anticipate an annual increase of about $305.

The letter said that the new rates were determined by each household’s energy use.

“These new rates are 22 per cent above the DMO reference price, however, can be 3 per cent above the DMO reference price if you pay on time,” it said.

“The estimated annual price is $2640 (incl. GST).

“This is based on the new rates and an average residential customer using 6818 kWh on a single rate or flat tariff with controlled load in the Ausgrid area.

“Any applicable plan discounts have been included and what you actually pay depends on how much electricity you use.”

Energy giants Origin and Discover Energy have also warned customers of expected price increases coming later this month and in August.

This comes after energy prices increased between 19.6 per cent and 23.9 per cent in NSW, South Australia and South East Queensland as of July 1.

In Victoria, prices were also lifted by 25 per cent by the state’s Essential Service Commission.

As a result, the federal and state governments have established a variety of rebate schemes to help ease the pressure of rising costs.
