Conor Benn insists lab errors caused his failed drug tests last year, criticising the WBC’s recent explanation that eating too many eggs led to him testing positive for a banned substance.

In a statement last week, the World Boxing Council announced the findings of their investigation, clearing Benn to return to their welterweight rankings after finding ‘no conclusive evidence’ that Benn had deliberately taken clomifene in the lead-up to his grudge match with Chris Eubank Jr.

Benn tested positive for the banned substance in tests carried out by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association in July and September.

However, the WBC accepted that a  ‘high consumption of eggs’ as a reasonable explanation for the failed test.’

The unbeaten fighter however insists the WBC ruling does him a ‘disservice’ and believes it only serves to prompt more ‘baseless negative speculation’.

‘In my defence to the WBC and the 270-page report provided to them, at no point did I indicate that I failed any VADA tests because of contaminated eggs,’ Benn wrote in a lengthy statement released on Tuesday evening.

‘As part of its lengthy investigation, the WBC instructed its own experts to view my supplements and diet, and they concluded that egg contamination was the most likely cause.

‘Those experts have seen this issue arise in elite athletes across other sports, and I have no reason to question their analysis when it concludes I am not a cheat.

‘I feel like the WBC statement did a disservice to my defence which was based upon a comprehensive scientific review of the testing procedures, which set out a number of reasons why we believed the results were completely unreliable and proved beyond any reasonable doubt that I am innocent.’

Citing an example of testing failures, Benn added: ‘My sample appears to have come back clear the first three times it was tested.

‘Without explanation it was retested again after nine days and only then did it show a trace positive result.’

Benn is still under a separate investigation from UK Anti-Doping and is not licenced to fight by the British Boxing Board of Control, who refused to sanction his bout with Eubank Jr after the failed tests were revealed by the Daily Mail last year.

Taking aim at the BBBoC, Benn said: ‘For those who gave me their unwavering support, I will be forever grateful.

‘For those who said they would wait for a verdict before deciding I was guilty, I appreciate your patience.

‘As for the BBBoC, they attacked me publicly and privately during the most difficult time in my life, treating me with utter contempt and without consideration for fair process or my mental state.’
