Interview with Jake Paul ahead of Amanda Serrano v Katie Taylor

Conor McGregor hit out at Jake Paul’s outfit last night as the YouTube star watched Amanda Serrano lose to Katie Taylor.

McGregor and Paul appear to be on a collision course before the end of their fight careers but the UFC star has thus far been reluctant to engage with the YouTube phenomenon. But as Paul took his seat at ringside on Saturday night, McGregor took aim at Serrano’s promoter.

“Who the f*** is this jackass in the pink Jimmy Saville glasses?” he wrote on social media. Paul later responded by saying: “I’m the one who has done more for fighters than you ever have; the one who has won five fights in the past two years while you have lost five. The one who isn’t owned by Dana White, the one who made the fight you just watched happen, the one who got your hero Katie Taylor paid, that’s who.”

McGregor replied with a picture of Saville, one of the world’s most prolific sex offenders, wearing similar pink glasses to Paul. McGregor had also congratulated Taylor on her win, adding: “Katie Taylor The Greatest! Absolutely incredible boxing! Take a bow ladies! What a contest!”

Paul was front and centre of the promotion for the undisputed fight after signing Serrano to his Most Valuable Promotions label. He was up against promotional powerhouse Eddie Hearn who has represented Taylor since her professional debut in 2006.

And Ireland’s Taylor showed immense courage and powers of recovery as she retained her status as undisputed lightweight champion with a split decision win over Amanda Serrano in an instant classic. The first women’s bout to headline New York’s celebrated Madison Square Garden fulfilled the hype, with Serrano, a nine-time world champion in seven weight categories, getting on top after the middle rounds.

Taylor was in danger of being stopped but used every ounce of her experience to adjust and her movement and accuracy came to the fore in the final rounds, which ultimately led to her hand being raised. She was given the nod by two judges by scores of 97-93 and 96-93, with a third plumping for her Puerto Rican opponent 96-94 and the close and absorbing nature of the fight immediately lead to calls for a rematch.
