Conor McGregor is in on a fight with Michael Chandler after a career-shaking knockout
Conor McGregor may not be winning titles like he once did, but the clout he carries is still impressive, even after all of the legal and personal issues he found himself in. He’s a bonafide draw, and one fighter wants a piece of that drawing power. That fighter is Michael Chandler.
Chandler KO’ed Tony Ferguson at UFC 274, and called out McGregor right after the fight. The knockout was so vicious that Chandler’s appeal shot up even more unexpectedly than a dog trying to snag a steak off the counter.
McGregor is on board, even if the fight is at welterweight, and that probably wouldn’t be possible if Chandler didn’t do to Ferguson what he did.
“I’d have a nice knock off this guy, no doubt about it. A firework spectacle,” he tweeted. “I like the 170 shout also. Tipped him over. I’m definitely game to fight this guy at some stage in my career. I see it happening after tonight. Congrats on a solid win Michael and another barnstormer.”
Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler would be career cementing for either man
McGregor’s a draw, sure, but after his back-to-back losses to Floyd Mayweather and then to Khabib Nurmagomedov, the aura is gone from him. He’s won one fight since 2016, and it was over a just about washed Donald Cerrone. Chandler was a god in Bellator but his run in the UFC has been uneven, mostly due to in-fight decisions and not due to declining talent.
A win over either man would cement or re-cement either Chandler or McGregor as a top guy in the game. It’s a fight that needs to happen so let’s hope it does.
