Conor McGregor: Who will he fight next?

Conor McGregor has been told that pursuing a fourth bout against rival Dustin Poirier is “pointless” by fellow UFC star Colby Covington.

The former two-weight world champion is eyeing an unprecedented third rematch with his nemesis Poirier after suffering a broken leg in their trilogy fight which caused him to lose the series.

But ex-welterweight interim champion Covington has insisted that Poirier should instead fight him, saying a fourth fight between he and McGregor would be meaningless.

Covington and Poirier are former teammates at American Top Team, and with the Louisiana native looking towards a move to welterweight, they could set up a fight next year.

And he believes McGregor’s legacy and drawing ability means he should get a world title shot, and not a fight with Poirier.

“It makes sense,” Covington told Helen Yee about a McGregor title fight despite only winning once in the last five years. “Conor should go out there and fight for the title.

“There’s no reason for him to fight Dustin now, that fight is pointless, that fight is dead. Dustin isn’t a big draw or anything.”

And he says that there is scope for a bout between McGregor and Oliveira, adding that it makes “a ton of sense.”

“McGregor can heal up and he can fight that,” he continued. “Dustin can re-evaluate and decide if he still wants to keep fighting, because you can already see the quit in him.

“Conor is a former champion, a two-division champion, he accomplished some great things in this sport and brought a lot of new eyes to this sport.

“A lot of people who didn’t watch this sport now watch it because of Conor and he’s done some good things.

“We don’t know if he still has that same drive as he used to, because the guy is filthy rich – when you’re that rich, what gets you up in the morning to drive you?”

Covington is one of the top fighters at welterweight, but likely won’t get another shot at the title as long as Kamaru Usman is champion.

He and Usman fought to the five round distance at UFC 268 in New York last month, but Covington lost the decision; his second loss to the Nigerian.

And he will now likely face either Poirier or Jorge Masvidal in his next outing on his road back to the top of the division.

Meanwhile, McGregor is recovering from the broken leg he suffered against Poirier in their trilogy, and will have to drop 40lbs if he wants to fight at lightweight again.

He is said to currently weigh 195lbs as he is unable to train MMA on his road to recovery, and has to focus on upper body workouts due to his limited mobility.

But he has promised that he will return and be champion again once he has been medically cleared to spar and compete next year.
