Conor McGregor: Who will he fight next?

Conor McGregor ‘s significant weight gain during his recovery from injury could help bridge the size gap to Jake Paul.

The Irishman is looking to make his UFC comeback next year and has returned to training as his recovery from a broken leg continues.

McGregor has been goaded into making a boxing return by YouTube star Paul after the expiration of his current deal with the UFC.

He now claims to weigh 190lb whcih could lead to a significant barrier being broken with regards to a potential fight, as Paul naturally walks around weighing around 200lb.

The catchweight agreed for Paul’s now-cancelled showdown with Fury was 192lb which is eight pounds lighter than the recognised cruiserweight limit in boxing.

Meanwhile McGregor last fought at 155lbs in the UFC lightweight division, losing to Dustin Poirier for a second time.

It is largely expected he will look for redemption in the same division after sliding now to ninth position in the rankings.

But that would mean a huge cut from his current weight.

McGregor and Paul have frequently taunted each other on social media with the American having first called out McGregor after his victory over Ben Askren earlier this year.

McGregor then responded to the victory by labelling Paul a “blogger jack***” in the aftermath of his success.

Paul claimed fight talks had begun shortly after McGregor broke his leg at UFC 264 in defeat to Poirier.

But nothing has yet materialised with McGregor’s social media activity suggesting his commitment to a redemption mission in the UFC.

The 24-year-old has now set a new deadline for a boxing showdown with McGregor and has vowed to end his career in emphatic fashion.

“I will fight everybody,” Paul told Bleacher Report. “This started with me calling out McGregor.

“And people were like ‘this kids crazy, Conor will kill him’. But now this fight could happen within the next 24 months one hundred percent.

“I will beat him, people are seeing how serious I am being about this and are changing the way they think about it.”

Paul has frequently mocked McGregor for his UFC defeats with McGregor having suffered three losses in his last four cage outings.

This included making a necklace of the Irish star being knocked out for his bitter rival Poirier.

Frequent jibes have been aimed by Paul at McGregor in a bid to heat up a rivalry without response, but the American believes his counterpart must “sober up” to secure a fight.

McGregor has previously entered the boxing ring in a historic exhibition with Floyd Mayweather, earning a guaranteed $30 million before the astronomic pay-per-view sales despite his resounding defeat.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, McGregor was also in talks to return to the ring against Manny Pacquiao before the deal collapsed.
