Coronation Street viewers are concerned three characters will be leaving the ITV soap as Paul Foreman’s (played by Peter Ash) heartbreaking storyline about his motor neurone disease unfolds.
During Monday’s episode of Coronation Street Paul asked his boyfriend Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) if he could help end his agony when the time came.
Taking to Reddit, one user theorised: “I feel like when Paul sadly and inevitably passes away, there will be little reason for Billy to stick around on the street. The people close to him will have all moved on or died.”
They also suggested Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) will leave the cobbles to study at university, leaving her guardian Billy with no real reason to remain in Weatherfield.
They added: “These are the circumstances in which it would make perfect sense for a person to want to move on if it happened to them in real life.
“I feel as though as things stand, Billy is at risk of being a token character after Paul exits.”
Another user called Harold Weigh shared: “I can see Paul, Billy and Todd having a big story coming up and someone being prosecuted.”
@OOrvr said: “Is Summer actually leaving the show? Unless they’re axing the character, I imagine they’ll find a way to keep her around the square.
“I also expect that the show will circle back to Billy and Todd at some point.”
Billy was left heartbroken by Paul’s admission, telling his partner he’d never put him “down like a dog”.
It would go against the vicar’s Christian beliefs, with Paul eventually accepting Billy would never come around to the idea.
Paul’s illness is caused when nerves in the brain and spinal cord, which are needed to walk, speak and breathe, stop working correctly.
Billy thought Paul was going to pop the question to him on Monday evening, telling the latter: “I thought you were going to propose when you said you wanted to talk to me.”
Paul replied: “It’s a good idea, I can’t get down on one knee but we should.”
Will Billy end up leaving the cobbles when his lover dies and Summer moves away for university?
Perhaps the character will want a fresh start as it would be too painful staying in Weatherfield surrounded by memories of Paul.
