The number of people to receive a booster jab for Covid-19 in the UK has now passed 10 million.
It comes as the number of confirmed cases fell to its lowest level for over a month today.
Government data released this afternoon showed that 10,062,704 people have now received a third dose of a coronavirus vaccine while in total, 50,234,416 have received at least a first dose.
The number of confirmed cases today was 30,305, which is the lowest daily number since September 19, when looking at cases by the date they were reported.
There have been 62 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted following today’s statistics: ‘An amazing 10 million people across the UK have already come forward for their booster.
‘We know vaccine immunity wanes over time, so boosters are vital in keeping you and your loved ones protected through the winter.
‘Please get this lifesaving jab as soon as you are called.’
Despite the milestone, only around 60% of those eligible have taken up the offer of their booster jab so far.
It has been reported that ministers are considering plans to make it more difficult for those who decline to travel abroad, in a similar way to those who have not had their first two jabs face currently.
Official guidance was updated earlier this month to say the Government ‘is reviewing the implications and requirements of boosters for international travel certification’ and ‘looking at whether and how booster vaccinations could be included in the NHS Covid Pass for travel’.
It means that in a future, a person may only be considered ‘fully vaccinated’ if they have had their third jab.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid has said younger relatives should urge eligible parents and grandparents to take up the offer of a booster and the flu vaccine to help avoid a return to coronavirus restrictions over Christmas.
People who are 50 and over, or aged 16 and over with a health condition that puts them at high risk of contracting Covid-19, and had their second dose six months ago, are eligible to get their booster.
