World number 35 Sam Craigie defeated Thailand’s women’s World Champion Mink Nutcharut 4-1 at BetVictor Welsh Open qualifying in Barnsley, to secure his place in the final stages.
The Englishman will be looking to push on in the second half of this season, after enjoying one of the best runs of his career so far by reaching the quarter-finals of the UK Championship before Christmas.
Craigie crafted breaks of 57, 86 and 127 on his way to today’s win. He now turns his attention to next week’s World Grand Prix, where he faces Tom Ford in the opening round.
Former Welsh Open champion Jordan Brown put on a fine display to beat Steven Hallworth 4-1 and qualify.
The Northern Irishman was a 750-1 outsider when he won the event in 2021. He scored a stunning upset win in the final, defeating Ronnie O’Sullivan 9-8 to lift the Ray Reardon Trophy.
This afternoon Brown composed runs of 53, 51, 52, 59 and 80 on his way to wrapping up the win.
Belgian teenager Julian Leclercq qualified with a 4-0 whitewash defeat of former German Masters semi-finalist Duane Jones. He composed runs of 92, 88 and 62 on his way to victory.
Matthew Selt beat Adam Duffy 4-2 to qualify, while David Lilley ousted Welshman Jamie Clarke by a 4-3 scoreline.
