The world’s biggest cruise ships can carry thousands of passengers. While most cruise guests are there to relax, unfortunately there might be a few bad eggs onboard.
A crew member took to Reddit to share some of the “worst behaviour” they witnessed while working.
The staff member ‘robonlocation’ said: “I will say the overall worst behaviour always seemed to happen when the ship was diverted for a medical emergency.
“I completely understand the issues created, such as missing flights, getting home late, impact on pet sitters, going back to work etc.
“It’s a big headache. But the behaviour I saw from people completely unable to be compassionate was astounding.
“I saw yelling, complete fits and even had something thrown at me, a lowly shore excursion staff, who obviously didn’t make the decision.”
A cruise ship will always have medical staff onboard and the biggest ships may even have a whole team.
If any passengers are feeling unwell, they will usually be sent to the infirmary where minor issues can be treated.
Medical staff will be able to treat passengers in an emergency situation but the ship will usually need to divert to take guests to hospital.
In some cases, guests may be taken to hospital via air ambulance as some ships have helicopter pads.
If the ship does need to take a diversion, passengers should be informed of the change of plans.
The crew member said the only time they “nearly lost it on a guest” was when a woman was very rude during a medical emergency.
They said: “I was normally very professional, but this was the one time I nearly lost it on a guest.”
Although a diversion may be inconvenient, guests will need to try to be understanding of the situation.
