A local cricket club in real need of new players? It’s not a concept that’s unusual in the amateur game.

And recruitment strategies can vary significantly, whether it be putting out adverts in the local press or making social media appeals. Some clubs may simply try and entice newcomers with the offer of free beer. But Englefield Green Cricket Club have decided to go down a different route altogether.

Rather than utilise more traditional sporting platforms, they’ve instead advertised their club in a dating app. Yes, the club have opened up a Tinder account, where they have posed as a 36-year-old female. The account profile picture is a pint of lager placed strategically by a boundary rope, with a match going on in the background.

And on the image the text reads: “George, 36, looking for new players for Englefield cricket club.” Contact details are also listed, under “Email: [email protected]. Twitter : @Egcc1. Insta: englefieldgreencc.”

The account was picked up by the @ThatsSoVillage Twitter page, who posted a screenshot of the profile picture and said: “Incredible recruitment tactic from Englefield CC, listing themselves as a 36-year-old woman on Tinder in an effort to attract new players.”

Unsurprisingly, there was a humorous response, with @SteRummerz saying: “Not a bad idea that fellas, probably would get more likes than a 36 year old account and we need a women’s team for funding so leave it to me.”

@BromigeToby wrote: “Brilliant to see, I wonder if the club president was behind the idea?” @RussKinks added: “You have to be creative these days.”

The official club account also retweeted, and simply added: “Let’s goooooooo.” And it will be interesting to see if the idea catches on, or perhaps, what kind of players response it yields for the Surrey-based team.

It’s all helped generate some positive publicity for the club following a difficult day on Sunday. In Division Three of the Surrey County League, their first XI were skittled for 71 in their home match with Claygate Cricket Club.

The visitors then chased down their target in 19.1 overs, and just two wickets down. It leaves Englefield ninth – and second bottom – of the division having lost their four league matched so far.

They have at least racked up 18 bonus points. And who know, maybe now their new recruitment policy will soon have them surging up the table.
