Bazball has moved the game on and changed its complexion so the version on show over the next 45 days will have more in common with the white ball slogfests than past Ashes but it will still be chess compared to draughts.
T20 may be the cool kid – and The Hundred the oddball loner – but the Test game remains the mayor of cricket-town. There is idle talk of this 2023 Ashes series being as good as 2005, the greatest of all.
Australia are, like then, the No 1 side in the world and England aiming to knock them off their perch. In Joe Root and Steve Smith there are two of the great batters of the generation on show. In Jimmy Anderson – even pushing 41 – and Pat Cummins two masters of the pace bowling art.
There is though no Shane Warne – not even in the commentary box, sadly, this time. He will be missed. It is a mouthwatering prospect but it is still unfair to expect any Ashes series to eclipse the classic of 18 years ago. Let us just say this has the potential to be the best since. Cricket, as it is meant to be, is relying on it.
