Cricket star Matthew Dunn’s young daughter Florence has tragically passed away. Two-year-old Florence suffered from a rare and severe form of epilepsy, Dravet Syndrome. Smith and wife Jessica shared their journey on social media to raise awareness of the condition.
In an emotional message on the Instagram page, the couple confirmed: “Our beautiful girl gained her angel wings and was lost to SUDEP. To find the words at this time is almost impossible. You were so incredibly loved and the imprint you have left on so many lives is something to behold.
“You lit up any room you entered. We will forever be so proud of you and your fight baby girl.”
Florence’s battle with the rare condition was documented through the Instagram page Florries’ Dravet Journey, a condition that begins in infancy or early childhood. It affects around one in every 15,000 people in the UK in 2023 and is described by the NHS as “rare, life-limiting and devastating genetic neurological condition”.
Dunn shared the post from the Instagram page with the words: “You will forever be in my heart.” The couple also have son Freddie, who is four-years-old.
Surrey confirmed Florence’s passing as Director of Cricket Alec Stewart said: “We are all absolutely devastated to hear of Florence’s passing and our very best wishes are with the whole Dunn family. We will provide Matt and Jessica with all the support that we can.”
All-rounder Dunn, who has previously represented England Under-19s and the Player Development XI made his first-class debut for Surrey in 2010. He enjoyed a stunning County Championship debut, bagging his first five-wicket hall during a match against Derbyshire the following year.
Messages of support from the cricket world flooded in for the family, with Essex posting: “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Matt and his family. Sending our love and strength at this sad time.”
Fellow county side Yorkshire also wrote: “Sending our love and thoughts to the Dunn family at this incredibly hard time.”
