Cristiano Ronaldo refused a request from Manchester United No.2 Steve McClaren to acknowledge the club’s away support afer Saturday’s catastrophic defeat at Brentford.

Erik ten Hag’s confidence-starved side conceded four times in the opening 35 minutes during which they were bullied into submission by their rampant opponents.

Ronaldo, starting for the first time this season, looked well off the pace and ceded possession in the build-up to Brentford’s opening goal from Josh Dasilva which opened the floodgates.

The 37-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation all summer long and another humiliating defeat is only likely to intensify his desire to quit Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.

At the final whistle, Ronaldo was seen in conversation with United No.2 Steve McClaren who appeared to instruct the club’s talisman to venture over to the away fans and applaud them.

Ronaldo, however, according to the MEN, ignored McClaren and trudged down the tunnel while the rest of his teammates did at least applaud a group of supporters who could scarecely comprehend what they had witnessed.

The unity displayed by Brentford, meanwhile, was in stark contrast to a disheveled group of United players who waved the white flag in the face of intense pressure.

Brentford’s press was led by Ivan Toney who feasted on a United defence that never looked capable of withstanding the physical onslaught they were subjected to.

‘The hard work and togetherness today showed what we’re about,’ said Toney. ‘We thoroughly deserved the three points.

‘It doesn’t stop here. We have to go again next week against Fulham and do the same again.

‘It was just hard work. We knew the high press would affect them. It was clear to see that if you work hard, you get the result.

‘We know they have great talent in there and have some players who can change the game.

‘When you work like we did today and run all over them, you get a result like we did.’
