Crowds welcome Johnny Depp in Glasgow after he wins defamation suit

Hollywood star Johnny Depp has been welcomed by crowds of fans in Glasgow just days after winning his multimillion-dollar US lawsuit against former wife Amber Heard.

Depp is in Scotland to perform with Jeff Beck as part of his Isolation tour and was greeted with cheers as he left the Dakota Hotel on his way to city’s Royal Concert Hall.

He popped up onstage at Beck’s London and Sheffield dates earlier this week to the surprise of fans.

He was then pictured cuddling orphaned badger cubs at a wildlife centre in Kent as he continued his UK tour alongside Beck.

Depp will join Beck onstage at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall on Friday.

It comes as Depp was awarded compensatory damages of $10m (£8m) and a further $5m (£4m) in punitive damages in his highly-publicised defamation trial against Heard.

Depp sued the Aquaman actress for $50m over a 2018 article she wrote for The Washington Post in which she described herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse”.

The article does not mention Depp by name, however his legal team said it falsely implied he abused the actress while they were together – the jury unanimously agreed.

Heard will “absolutely” be appealing the decision in the US defamation case, her lawyer has said.

Elaine Bredehoft said the Aquaman star has “excellent grounds” for the appeal as there was “so much” evidence that was not included during the trial.

Depp had previously lost a similar trial in the UK which he brought against the publisher of The Sun newspaper after an article, also written in 2018, which referred to him as a “wife-beater”.

Although on Wednesday the jury awarded Depp damages of $15m dollars, in a separate verdict, Heard was awarded $2m dollars (£1.6 million) in damages after her counterclaim against him over comments made by his lawyer Adam Waldman, who allegedly referred to her abuse claims as a “hoax”, was found to be defamatory.
