As Britons start planning garden parties for the upcoming coronation, many will be pruning their plants in order to make them look neater for the big day. Pruning plants improves their shape and stimulates growth for the season ahead.
Plants that are pruned during the spring months will likely produce more flowers when they come to bloom.
If plants are not pruned properly, they could end up looking unpleasant, they could produce fewer flowers and are more likely to be damaged by diseases and pests.
With this in mind, Black + Decker has shared how to prune plants so they look neat and tidy for the coronation.
Tim Winstanley, senior brand manager at Black + Decker said pruning plants in spring will encourage “new and stronger growth”.

With a rise in temperatures causing a surge in plant growth, now is the perfect time to start pruning
Tim explained: “Trimming plants and shrubbery, that have been neglected over the winter months, will prepare them to flourish once again and help to re-shape and control their height and width as to avoid any further overgrowing and messy looking areas of the garden.
“Using pruning shears to trim dead growth will encourage new and stronger growth giving them a better chance of survival over the summer months.
“Cutting at the correct angle is crucial to minimising excess tissue forming that could eventually rot and infect the rest of the plant.
Tim also suggested removing debris from gardens to give them the ultimate spring clean and make them look more attractive for the coronation.
Some of the debris that needs clearing away includes grass clippings, stray leaves and mud.
Tim said: “Raking away moss regularly and removing old grass shavings or leaves from the surface of the lawn is important.
“If left, the layers of thatch will encourage weeds to grow, making next year’s cleaning even bigger.
“After removing these loose bits of waste, use a pressure washer to give your patio a thorough wash down.
“Be sure to experiment with the different nozzles available to find the right one for the surface you’re cleaning.
“Using the optimal nozzle and water pressure combination will help you get the job done more quickly.”
