Summer has been hot for all but one thing: celebrity marriages.

No, no, we’re not talking about Scooter Braun’s broken-down relationships with Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato (just to name a few) but rather, the romantic splits that we never saw coming.

(Kidding. We predicted a few of them.)

There are many who broke up earlier in the year (Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner, Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, Ariana Madix and Tom Sandoval) but we wanted to take a closer look at the couples whose breakups were recent. So recent, in fact, that their side of the bed might not yet be cold.

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari

This was supposed to be the one. Spears and Asghari were together for years before their 14-month marriage came to an end, so sadly, Brit’s third union was not the charm.

A lot has been said of Spears and Asghari’s marital demise, from nasty prenup chatter to cheating rumours, talk Sam taking off for months at a time and not being present, and accusations of inappropriate behaviour between the singer and her staff.

But both eventually took to social media to explain a few things, with Asghari capping it off best: “S*** happens.”

Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello

Vergara and Manganiello announced they were divorcing, revealing that they “love and care for one another very much” but “have made the difficult decision to divorce.”

Then came the standard prenup talk (in her Modern Family days, Vergara was the highest paid woman in television, at one point), rumours that the two were “always very different,” and posts featuring sexy photos showing a separation does a woman good.

Vergara is even getting help from her America’s Got Talent co-judge Howie Mandel as he attempts to find her a new man. Not that she needs the assist.

Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez

The only thing that eclipsed Vergara and Manganiello’s separation was Grande and Gomez’s. The same day, mere hours earlier, reports were flying that the “Dangerous Woman” hitmaker and her husband of just over two years were done.

The rumour mill was in overtime after she was spotted not wearing her wedding ring at Wimbledon, across the pond where she had been living as she filmed Wicked.

Speaking of, what may be more surprising about the split between the low-key couple is that Grande has already moved on with her co-star, newly single Ethan Slater. Thank u, next.

Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied

The Oscar winner and ballet-dancing husband of 11 years seemed like one of those “normal” Hollywood couples but with reports that Millepied had an affair, there was no going back.

The couple did not release any official statements but Us Weekly reported the couple separated earlier this month.

Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau

The Trudeaus’ separation news either had you clutching your pearls in shock that their 18-year marriage was over or you shrugged because you thought they had separated long ago.

In any case, the prime minister’s office released a statement as did Sophie on her Instagram account, announcing they had signed a legal agreement and ended their 18-year marriage.

They added that the will “remain a close family” and their focus was on “raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment,” revealing that their summer vacation was still going to happen — and it did.
