Cruise expert warns passengers there is ‘CCTV all over ships’

Although cruise holidays are usually trouble free for passengers, unfortunately this isn’t always the case.

Videos of cruise passengers involved in mass brawls have gone viral and passengers on one of the world’s biggest cruise lines, Carnival, have been warned against bringing illegal drugs onboard.

Yasmin Pekel, cruise expert and CEO of Blue Cruise, has shared how British tourists can avoid getting in trouble on a cruise.

She told Express.co.uk: “The laws that apply onshore also apply when you’re cruising. This means stealing onboard is not only inappropriate but also illegal.

“There is CCTV all over cruise ships, alongside security, and if you are caught you could be placed in the ‘brig’.”

A ship’s brig is the jail on a cruise ship where passengers may be detained if they break any of the line’s rules.

If the ship doesn’t have a brig to detain unruly guests, they could be placed under “cabin arrest” instead.

In these cases, a guest will be unable to leave their cabin and may be guarded by security or other staff.

Yasmin added: “Assaulting another guest or a member of staff on a cruise ship will not only land you in trouble but could also lead to being sent to prison, alongside a criminal record.

“Cruise lines usually have a zero-tolerance policy towards violence, so if you think a conversation may escalate, remove yourself from the situation and speak with a suitable staff member as soon as possible.”

Fighting onboard could see guests removed from the ship and handed over to the local authorities.

If another guest does something irritating such as pushing in the buffet queue or hogging a pool lounger, it’s best to contact the crew.

The crew will be able to sort out the situation without it escalating into violence between passengers.

If a fight does break out, security will be called immediately and passengers could receive a lifelong ban from the cruise line.
