‘CRUNCH TIME’ coming but Mandurah rail line work on track

‘CRUNCH TIME’ coming but Mandurah rail line work on track

The Mandurah line is on-track to open on January 15, but only if testing runs smoothly over the next few days.

The line from Aubin Grove to Elizabeth Quay Station was temporarily closed between December 26 and January 14 so work could be carried out on the Thornlie-Cockburn METRONET Link.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the track had been laid and workers were now focusing on overhead wires and signalling.

She admitted the rest of this week would be “crunch time” and the real test would be in making sure the electricity was working in the system.

Ms Saffioti said although there would be more people heading back to work next week, she didn’t expect it would lead to commuter chaos.

“I think many people are aware of what is happening and many people are using the bus replacements and will use bus replacements as they get back to work,” Ms Saffioti said.

“Overall this time is generally quieter on the road in particular with no school drop-offs and pick-ups.”

Speaking about the previous METRONET delays, Ms Saffioti said there were ongoing challenges such as workforce shortages and supply chain supply chain issues.

“It is challenging, but we’re working with contractors to deliver this project well,” she said.

When asked if it was on budget, she said “currently, yes”.
