Deepak Chahar was at the receiving end as the bowler dropped a dolly while fielding at the backward square region. The incident happened in the second over of the match as Shubman Gill was facing Tushar Deshpande.
Deshpande, who has been in good form with 19 wickets heading into the final, bowled a fuller delivery on the pads of the in-form batter, who flicked the ball straight to Deepak Chahar at backward square. The fielder, however, dropped what was a regulation catch.
Deepak Chahar was in fact at fault for dropping two catches in the powerplay as he dropped one of his own bowling at the beginning of the fifth over. He offered luck to Wriddhiman Saha, this time who miscued a knuckle ball straight to the bowler, who did try to reach the ball while on the followthrough but only got a fingertip.
Chahar to Saha, 1 run, now Chahar drops one off his own bowling. A tough chance though. Good length on off, a knuckle ball that Saha drives uppishly to the left of Chahar who reaches out in followthrough, gets fingertips but can’t hold on
Shubman Gill has been batting in full swing this IPL with 850-plus runs heading into the final and has been the second Indian batter to do so after Virat Kohli and third overall with Jos Buttler being the only other batter to do so in one season.
Bulk of Shubman Gill’s run came at the fag end of the season as the batter slammed three centuries in his last four games before the final and also scored a 94* against Sunrisers Hyderabad prior to that.
The batter was crucial in knocking out Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 2 as he slammed 129 runs off just 60 balls to take the defending champions to a mammoth 233/4. MI crumbled under pressure while chasing despite a fighting half century from Suryakumar Yadav. (79).
Shubman Gill continued his good showing in the final too as at the time of writing this report, the opener was batting at 36 runs off 17 balls as Gujarat Titans were off to a blistering start.
