Custom officers at Chennai International Airport are hailed as heroes for saving the lives of trapped wild animals. They rescued wild animals that were being smuggled from Thailand to India. They have handed over the smugglers to the police for further investigation.
On Sunday, May 15, 2022, the officers noticed a passenger that arrived from Bangkok behaving uncanny. They acted on specific inputs and stopped the passenger for verification. They rescued an albino porcupine and a white-lipped red chested tamarin (monkey) from his baggage.
The other incident took place on Monday, May 16, 2022, and the authorities were able to rescue a leucistic sugar glider that was kept concealed in a container, which was placed inside the baggage of that passenger. This passenger too arrived from Bangkok.
On investigation, both the smugglers informed the officers that an unknown person had given them these bags and they were asked to hand over these bags to another person waiting outside the airport.
The rescued wild animals were sent back to Thailand on the advice of the Animal Quarantine department officials.
