DaBaby said he would handle his 2021 homophobia controversies differently if given the chance.
During his appearance on The Shop Uninterrupted, the Charlotte, North Carolina, native reflected on that tumultuous time when he offended the LGBTQ community with comments he made during his 2021 Rolling Loud performance. When asked by Maverick Carter if he could’ve handled the situation differently, DaBaby made it clear that he regrets how it all played out.
“Absolutely,” DaBaby said from his seat. “That’s what came out my own mouth and said as of late, not even as of late, I would maybe handled it the way he handled it. I apologized, but I didn’t mean to apologize because I’m this type of person.”
He continued: “I’m gonna fight to the tooth and nail, like if I, you know what I mean? My character and my intentions – that’s something I am never going to let you make me out, I’m not a bad person. I’m unfaltering on that.”
DaBaby shocked the world during his 2021 Rolling Loud performance in Miami when he referenced his fans in the LGBTQ community and sexually transmitted diseases.
“If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cellphone lighter up,” he told attendees at the time. “Ladies, if your pussy smell like water, put your cellphone lighter up. Fellas, if you ain’t sucking dick in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up.”
DaBaby tried to explain himself following his performance, but his homophobic rant already had him in hot water and saw several music festivals sever ties with him. Other artists in the music industry also denounced his comments, including Dua Lipa, Elton John, Questlove, and more.
An official apology came in August 2021 via Instagram, but fans were once again upset with DaBaby after he deleted his post days later.
