Damar Hamlin remains optimistic as he embarks on a long road to recovery.
On Saturday afternoon, the 24-year-old Buffalo Bills safety took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message to his fans.
“When you put real love out into the world it comes back to you 3x’s as much,” he wrote. “The Love has been overwhelming, but I’m thankful for every single person that prayed for me and reached out. We brung the world back together behind this. If you know me you know this only gone make me stronger. On a long road keep praying for me! ❤️3️⃣ #3strong.”
The post came just days after Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during the Bills’ Jan. 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Just minutes into the first quarter, Hamlin collapsed on the field after tackling Begnals’ wide receiver Tee Higgins. Medical emergency personnel immediately took to the field and began administering chest compressions, as the athletes and spectators looked on. After 10 terrifying minutes, was removed from the field and transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Hamlin’s uncle confirmed the Pennsylvania-born athlete had been placed on a ventilator after suffering lung damage. Though he remained in critical condition at the time, his team took to social media to provide a positive update.
“Damar remains in the ICU in critical condition with signs of improvement noted yesterday and overnight,” the Bills tweeted Wednesday. “He is expected to remain under intensive care as his health care team continues to monitor and treat him.”
The breathing tube was removed several days later, allowing Hamlin to share a few words to his teammates.
“Love you boys,” he reportedly told the Bills during a FaceTime call.
On Friday, Hamlin returned to Instagram to reshare a few posts from his supporters, including his teammate Stefon Diggs.
Diggs was among the Bills players who remained in Cincinnati to be near Hamlin during his recovery.
