During the 2019 Summer League, Dan Dakich argued that Erik Spoelstra isn’t even a top-10 coach in the NBA.
Dakich argued that Spoelstra shouldn’t be considered an elite coach because he had “The Big Three” in Miami from 2010-14.
“If you’re gonna tell me Erik Spoelstra is one of the two best coaches and it’s not debatable, I’d simply say you’re out of your mind,” Dakich said. “I don’t think he’s in the top 10. He’s just a guy.”
Well, it’s safe to say that take has aged poorly.
Since this rant, Spoelstra has taken the Heat to the Finals twice without having the built-in excuse of being carried by LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

Of course, Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo have played pivotal roles for the Heat this season. That being said, this year’s squad isn’t exactly stacked with marquee names.
Caleb Martin, Max Strus, Duncan Robinson and Cody Zeller have all contributed to the Heat’s playoff run.
The Heat’s overachieving core will be put to the test in the Finals, make no mistake about it. However, they’ll have a chance to win each game because of how good Spoelstra has been on the bench.
