LeBron James confirmed plans to return for another season at Wednesday night’s ESPYS. The declaration made headlines, even if everybody assumed he wouldn’t retire.

On Thursday, Dan Patrick and his crew responded to LeBron’s dramatic announcement during an acceptance speech. He mocked his former employer for magnifying the reveal as a big deal.

“I wasn’t waiting for an announcement,” Patrick said, via Awful Announcing. “I got one, and then ESPN’s treating it like it’s breaking news. You know what’s breaking news? If he retired. Not that he’s coming back. Who thought he might retire? NOBODY.”

James retiring wasn’t on anybody’s radar until he expressed some uncertainty after his Los Angeles Lakers got eliminated from the playoffs. Was the 38-year-old building suspense for a moment like this?

Patrick and his crew also panned James for what they considered a self-aggrandized speech. They wondered if he practiced the tease of considering the day when he can longer give his all, leading to the “Lucky for you guys, that day is not today” line.

“It’s just needy,” Patrick said of LeBron’s announcement. “And you don’t need it. ‘I want publicity. Don’t forget about me, I don’t want to cheat the game.’ Play! Just play. You’re one of the greatest of all time.”

Patrick speculated that LeBron “might play for another five years.” If that’s the case, he’d probably hope James doesn’t create drama surrounding his return every offseason.
