Daniel Radcliffe Addresses Possible Cameo in HBO’s Harry Potter Series

The Harry Potter franchise will soon be rebooted, but in a different medium. Famously, Daniel Radcliffe played Harry Potter in the immensely-successful series of feature films, consisting of five installments between 2001 and 2011. Based on the original novels by J.K. Rowling, the franchise will next be reimagined as an episodic TV series at HBO. The plan is for each Harry Potter novel to serve as the basis for a season of the show with the series potentially spanning seven seasons.

While Rowling will be involved, an all-new cast will be introduced, and while the show is in its early development stages, there hasn’t been any indication of any cast members of the films getting involved. In a new interview with ComicBook.com, Radcliffe was directly asked if he’d be up for a role in the show. While not outright saying that won’t happen, seemingly leaving the door open for the possibility, Radcliffe suggests it’s unlikely, given the focus on starting completely fresh. With that said, Radcliffe also says he’s happy to pass the torch, even if he’s not there to do it in person.

From the interview:

“My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere. So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way. But I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I’m very excited to have that torch passed. But I don’t think it needs me to physically pass it.”

Given that the Harry Potter series is in the early works, it’s still not known when the show will be making its way to HBO and Max. With that said, HBO and original author J.K. Rowling have been teasing the reboot by focusing on how exciting it will be to reimagine the story in the episodic series format.

“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” HBO & Max Content CEO Casey Bloys said in a statement. “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

Rowling added, “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series.”

As for Radcliffe, there are other places to catch the actor these days. He recently starred in the acclaimed comedy WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story, which is streaming for free on The Roku Channel. He is also starring in the new fourth season of the anthology series Miracle Workers, dubbed Miracle Workers: End Times, which premieres on TBS on Monday, July 10.
